World Smile Day!
As is well known by now throughout the world, Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.

As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world.

The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®. Ever since that first World Smile Day® held in 1999, it has continued every year in Smiley's hometown of Worcester, MA and around the world.

Join us to celebrate World Smile Day across the Heatons! Dig out your September issue of Heatons Post for your ready-made smile image, provided by the wonderful Kimberley Bevan, decorate to your hearts content and stick it to your window! Let the residents of the Heatons smile away as they wander and see your smiles!  Visit www.facebook.com/heartoftheheatons to share your smile pictures and photos of the ones you find on your travels in the area!

Bush Baby Books - Reading
Laura Stewart is a young mum who started an online bookshop, www.bushbabybooks.co.uk, to provide books where every child, especially the youngest, can feel represented by reading about characters just like them.

Her talk, which she has given to primary schools and nurseries, starts with reading from one of her favourite books and then letting young children handle some of the books she brings with her. In some areas of Greater Manchester there are few black faces, in others there are many, but BushBabyBooks and Seven Arches Publishing believe that no matter what your family background all children need to see representations of themselves and of others who may be different in some way in the books that are read to them by the adults who care for them.
