Recycled Art Exhibition

The art exhibition will showcase the work produced by Stockport's unpaid carers at recycled art sessions run at the Heatons Centre over the last year by Mo Fox.

At Signpost Stockport for Carers, we want carers to be recognised for the extraordinary work they do to support others. It is our mission to support them in return. Carers deserve to live happy, fulfilling lives in their own right but we know caring often takes great sacrifices, taking its toll on their mental and physical wellbeing as well as limiting social opportunities and career progression. Whatever they may be facing, we want carers to know that they are not alone. This is why the sessions we run are so important.

The exhibition will run alongside Annie's Café, a monthly vintage style café run by volunteers who are carers and former carers. All donations from the café support Signpost Stockport for Carers.

Signpost Stockport for Carers is an independent local charity who have been supporting carers for more than 30 years. If you’re a Stockport carer or caring for somebody living in Stockport, we’re here for you.

A carer is anyone providing help to a friend, neighbour or relative who could not manage without them because of frailty, illness, addiction or disability. Carers often don’t recognise themselves as ‘carers’; they just think of themselves as helping out somebody they care about.

World Smile Day!

As is well known by now throughout the world, Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963.

That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet. As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace.

Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®. Ever since that first World Smile Day® held in 1999, it has continued every year in Smiley's hometown of Worcester, MA and around the world.

Join us to celebrate World Smile Day across the Heatons!

Dig out your September 2021 issue of Heatons Post for your ready-made smile image, provided by the wonderful Kimberley Bevan, decorate to your hearts content and stick it to your window! Let the residents of the Heatons smile away as they wander and see your smiles!

ROH: Mayerling

The Savoy Cinema Heaton Moor brings you a ROH Royal Ballet performance:

SYNOPSIS: Inspired by dark and gripping real life events, this Royal Ballet classic depicts the sexual and morbid obsessions of Crown Prince Rudolf leading to the murder-suicide scandal with his mistress Mary Vetsera. The oppressive glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court in the 1880s sets the scene for a suspenseful drama of psychological and political intrigue as Rudolf fixates on his mortality.

Kenneth MacMillan's 1978 ballet remains a masterpiece of storytelling and this revival marks 30 years since the choreographer’s death. Expect to see the Company at its dramatic finest across potent ensemble scenes and some of the most daring and emotionally demanding pas de deux in the ballet repertory.

Calling all Dudes!

The Savoy Cinema in Heaton Moor will be hosting a Lebowskifest on Saturday 15th October: a special one-off screening of the Coen Brother's cult classic The Big Lebowski. White Russians will be served at the bar, fancy-dress is encouraged and there will be a giant raffle at the end of the screening.

The evening is hosted by Phil Drinkwater - local filmmaker, screenwriter and teacher. On New Year's Day 2020, Phil's son Jude died aged 22 months after being born with a genetic condition called Rett Syndrome. Since then, Phil and his family have been raising money in Jude's memory for a charity called Reverse Rett; an organisation who are funding research into treatments and potentially a cure for this rare and severe genetic condition. Last year Phil walked over 40 miles in a single day from his house on Manchester Road to Crosby Beach to raise money for a beautiful rainbow buddy bench which now sits at the heart of the community in Manchester Road Park.

This year his legs are still annoyed at him, so he's hosting Lebowskifest instead! And all the money raised will be donated to Reverse Rett.

Not only will the night include a screening of the film, fancy dress and white russians aplenty, but there will also be a raffle and a chance to win some incredible prizes, which so far include:

Wine Tasting Experience at Cork of The North
A Meal for Two plus drinks at The Mekong Cat
£30 booze voucher for Heaton Hops
£50 worth of pizza and beer at The Magnet

Plus many more to be announced!

So - to all the Dudes, Bowlers, Nihilists, Pacificists and those who just need a rug to tie the room together - see you there!
